Aging in Place is a concept that uses the principals of universal design to accommodate physical needs and abilities of all ages. Aging in place allows seniors to stay in their home longer by making changes that take safety and ease of use into consideration.
Here are some innovative products that are fantastic for this purpose.
REFRIGERATOR OVENS- This is a wonderful concept in our busy world. A prepared meal is stored in the oven with the refrigerator setting on. A command can be sent remotely via computer or smart phone to turn the oven setting on and start cooking. These are great for people who need help preparing meals. A caregiver can prepare the meal in advance which then can be heated when ready.
AL VACUUM SYSTEMS- No vacuum cleaner to lug around the house. Just plug a hose into a wall inlet. Vacuum system is activated carrying dirt to a central collection tank. An insert at the base of the kitchen cabinet can also be installed allowing dirt to be swept directly to the unit.
WASHLET TOILET ATTACHMENTS- Similar to a bidet these attachments can be attached to your commode. The Washlets offer many options including warm water for front and rear washing, warm air dryer, heated seat and a lid that opens and closes automatically. This can make the bathroom experience easier and more dignified for people who struggle in that area.
TUB CUT OUT SYSTEM- This is a great budget option that does not require replacing the bathtub. A cut out is made in the existing tub allowing easy access for showering and bathing.
GRAB BARS- Grab bars are a must for toilet and tub/shower areas. Currently 15% of the world’s population is over 65. The demand in the market place for products that serve this population and look good is taking hold. That means there are more options for grab bars that don’t look like they came straight out of a hospital supply catalog.
These product innovations are great because they serve the whole population, not just one age or ability. To learn more about other home safe ideas, follow this link to the AARP website. http://www.aarp.org/livable-communities/info-2014/aarp-home-fit-guide-aging-in-place.html
